Nursing Scholarships

The purpose of the Houston Nursing Education Foundation Scholarship Program is to provide academic financial assistance to individuals who demonstrate the desire and ability to pursue a professional nursing career in the Greater Houston community and who have demonstrated financial need.

In 2025, HNEF awarded more than $750,000 in scholarships to undergraduate and graduate nursing students. Scholarships are awarded to support studies toward a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or advanced nursing degree and are based on academics, leadership ability, community involvement, financial need, and commitment to pursuing a nursing career. Students selected may be awarded up to $15,000 per year for undergraduates ($5,000 per semester), and $3,000 per year for graduate students, to be used for tuition, fees, and books while attending one of the following Houston area colleges and universities:
  • Houston Christian University
  • Prairie View A&M University
  • University of St. Thomas
  • Texas Woman’s University
  • University of Houston
  • University of Houston — Clear Lake
  • University of Texas Health Science Center Houston
  • University of Texas Medical Branch Galveston

Application Information

The scholarship accepts applications once a year, with the application opening in January and closing in February. Applications are accepted online from qualified individuals in the following categories:
Traditional BSN
For undergraduate students who have been accepted to, or have applied to, a BSN program through the nursing college at an eligible Houston-area school. Must be pursuing a BSN degree in the upcoming academic year.
Accelerated BSN
For students who have earned a Bachelor’s degree in a different field but are returning to college and have been accepted to, or have applied to, an accelerated program leading to a BSN.
Advanced Degree
For students who have been accepted to, or have applied to, a master’s or doctoral level nursing degree program.

"After many years of supporting a variety of programs to help meet unaddressed healthcare needs in the Houston metropolitan area, the Board of Directors of the Healthcare and Nursing Education Foundation has decided to focus all of its resources on providing scholarships to nursing students who plan to practice in our community. This decision was based on the Board’s desire to help address the critical shortage of nurses and its belief that a more targeted use of the Foundation’s available funds will have a greater impact. As a result, the Foundation plans to change its name to the Houston Nursing Education Foundation in order to better reflect its mission.

As we move forward, we are delighted to support an expanded cohort of individuals who plan to pursue a career in nursing or enhance their credentials in the field."
